Sauna Heater Size Calculator: How to Size Your Heater

Undersized heater = slow heat-up and weak steam. Oversized = wasted money and short cycling. This guide shows you how to match heater kW to your sauna room volume, using verified manufacturer specs from 11 heaters in our sauna heater dataset.

The sizing rule

Manufacturers specify a room volume range (in m³) for each heater. The general rule of thumb:

Room volumeMinimum kWTypical heater class
1–3 m³ (35–106 ft³)2 kWCompact 120V (VEVOR 2 kW)
6–9 m³ (210–320 ft³)6–8 kWStandard 240V wall heater
8–14 m³ (280–500 ft³)9 kWHigh-output 240V or wood-burning
8–20 m³ (280–706 ft³)13–24 kWLarge wood-burning stove

Always follow the manufacturer's specific range — not just the rule of thumb. The Harvia KIP80B (8 kW) is rated for 7.1–12.0 m³, while the VEVOR 9 kW covers 9–13 m³. Same kW, different ranges, because stone capacity and heater design affect heat distribution.

How to measure your sauna room volume

  1. Measure the interior dimensions (not exterior wall-to-wall): length × width × height in meters.
  2. Subtract bench volume if benches take up significant space (usually negligible).
  3. For L-shaped or irregular rooms, break into rectangles and sum.
  4. Convert: 1 m³ = 35.3 ft³.

Example: a 2 m × 2 m × 2.1 m sauna = 8.4 m³ (297 ft³). That falls in the 6–9 m³ band → a 6–8 kW electric heater (Harvia KIP80B, SW80) or a wood-burning stove (Harvia M3, HUUM Hive Wood 13).

Voltage: 120V vs 240V

Most sauna heaters need 240V. The only 120V model in our dataset is the VEVOR 2 kW — and it covers just 1–3 m³. If your sauna room is bigger than a closet, you need a dedicated 240V circuit.

  • 120V / 2 kW: VEVOR 2 kW 120V — 1–3 m³ only. $174. Check Price
  • 240V / 8 kW: Harvia KIP80B, SW80, Spirit SP80E — 7–13 m³. $1,269–$3,277.
  • 240V / 9 kW: Harvia Spirit SP90E, HUUM Drop 9, VEVOR 9 kW — 8–14 m³. $272–$3,496.

Stone capacity: why it matters for sizing

Stones store heat and release it as steam when you pour water. More stones = softer, longer-lasting steam — but the heater needs enough kW to heat them. A 9 kW heater with 55 kg of stones (HUUM Drop 9) produces noticeably softer steam than a 9 kW heater with 15 kg (VEVOR 9 kW), even at the same room volume.

  • Low (15–20 kg): VEVOR 9 kW (15 kg, not included), Harvia KIP80B (20 kg), SW80 (20 kg)
  • Medium (30–50 kg): Harvia M3 (30 kg), Spirit SP80E (45 kg), Spirit SP90E (50 kg)
  • High (55–90 kg): HUUM Drop 9 (55 kg), HUUM Hive Wood 13 (90 kg)
