How to Choose Sauna Stones

Three checks, in order — each one narrows the roster above to the stones that fit your heater and routine.

1. 1. Match the stone to your heater type. Electric heaters need smaller stones (2–5 cm) that pack tightly around the elements; wood-burning stoves take larger stones (5–10 cm) that store more heat. The compatibility columns above show each product's verified fit.
2. 2. Pick the material for heat storage and steam. Olivine and peridotite (volcanic) stones resist thermal cracking and throw soft steam; plain basalt is the durable budget choice. The material column above lists each product's verified stone type.
3. 3. Buy enough weight — and plan the replacement interval. Heater manuals state the required stone fill in kilograms; underfilling voids warranties and overheats elements. Stones degrade — plan to replace or rotate them every 1–3 years depending on use.
